Tom Carroll’s pursuit of a second consecutive world title in 1984 placed him against emerging talents including Tom Curren and Mark Occhilupo. Equipment became a decisive part of that contest. After a strong result in South Africa, Carroll travelled to California looking for a board that could match the speed and freedom he had seen under Occy’s feet. He approached Rusty Preisendorfer in San Diego, who was already shaping for several of the tour’s most progressive surfers. The result was a 5’11” that Carroll tested in demanding Southern California waves. The board clicked, helping him achieve some of his best results in California before carrying that momentum into the European leg.Occy may be the surfer most closely connected with Rusty designs from that period, but it was Carroll who ultimately secured the title on one. The story captures a defining era when surfers and shapers pushed one another rapidly forward—and when the right board could alter the direction of a world championship.Adapted with permission from Rusty Surfboards USA.
