Few surfboard builders have influenced design across more than half a century. Rusty Preisendorfer began by experimenting during the shortboard revolution and went on to shape equipment for generations of leading surfers. His work has moved through asymmetrical concepts, high-performance boards, fishes, midlengths, big-wave equipment and modern digital design. Along the way, feedback from surfers including Mark Occhilupo, Taylor Knox, Josh Kerr and many others became part of an enormous working archive. The constant has been curiosity. Even after tens of thousands of boards, Rusty continues to study foil, flex, materials, bottom contours and fins. Each new design is informed by history without being trapped by it.That is the value of 55 years at the planer: not nostalgia alone, but a deeper set of references for solving the next surfer’s problem. The most exciting design period can still be the one happening now.Adapted with permission from Rusty Surfboards USA.
