General support
01How do I contact Rusty South Africa?+
Use the chat box or visit our contact page. Our team will assist with orders, boards, shipping and warranty questions.
02Where can I find the volume calculator?+
Use the Volume Calculator link in the main website menu to find a suitable starting point for your board volume.
03Can I talk to a shaper?+
Contact the Rusty South Africa team through the chat box or contact page and tell us about your ability, usual waves, current board and what you want from your next board. We will arrange the most appropriate advice available for your order.
04Do boards come with fins, traction and a leash?+
Fins, traction pads and leashes are not automatically included unless they are specifically listed on the product page or order confirmation. Check the product details or contact us before ordering.
05Can I get my board in time for my surf trip?+
Tell us your travel date before placing the order. Stock boards may be the safest option for a fixed deadline. Custom production and courier dates are estimates and cannot be guaranteed unless confirmed by our team in writing.
06Can I work directly with Rusty Preisendorfer?+
Orders placed through Rusty South Africa are managed by the local team and production network. Direct involvement from Rusty Preisendorfer is not guaranteed. Contact us and we will guide your enquiry through the appropriate channel.
07Does volume matter differently for lighter and heavier surfers?+
Volume gives a general indication of flotation for every surfer. A one-litre change represents a larger percentage on a low-volume board than on a high-volume board, so lighter surfers may notice smaller litre changes. Volume is only one factor: outline, width, rocker, rails, bottom contours, construction and fins also affect how a board performs.
08What kinds of surfboards does Rusty make?+
The Rusty range includes high-performance shortboards, everyday performance models, grovellers, fishes, twins, step-ups, midlengths and other specialist designs. Availability in South Africa varies, so browse the current range or contact us for a recommendation.
09Which Rusty model is right for me?+
The right model depends on your height, weight, ability, fitness, usual waves, current board and performance goals. Use the volume calculator as a starting point, then contact us for a personalised recommendation.
010What information should I provide for a board recommendation?+
Tell us your height, weight, age, ability, fitness, usual wave type and size, current board dimensions and volume, plus what you like or want to improve. This helps us recommend a suitable model and dimensions.
011Should I buy a stock board or order a custom board?+
A stock board is the fastest and simplest option when its dimensions suit you. A custom board is better when you need specific dimensions, construction, fin setup, colour or performance adjustments. Custom orders require manufacturing time.
012Is the volume calculator a final recommendation?+
No. It provides a useful starting range, but volume alone does not determine how a board will surf. Model, length, width, thickness, outline, rocker, rails, construction and fin setup must also be considered.

Orders & shipping
01What is the status of my order?+
Custom PU boards generally take 2-3 weeks and custom EPS boards generally take 2-4 weeks to manufacture. These are estimates. If your order is outside the estimated timeframe, use the chat box or contact page with your order number.
02How can I track my board?+
Tracking information is provided by the courier in your shipping notification after dispatch. Check your spam folder or contact us if you have not received it.
03How much is delivery in South Africa?+
Local delivery may cost up to R700 per board. For multiple boards, contact us to discuss a possible combined delivery rate.
04Do you ship internationally?+
International shipping may be arranged on request. Contact us for availability and pricing. Customs duties, import taxes and clearance fees may apply.
05Can you replicate an old Rusty board I owned?+
We may be able to use the dimensions, model information, photographs or serial details from an older board as a reference. Exact replication is not always possible because materials, templates and production methods can change. Send us as much information as possible before ordering.
06Can I order my board through a retailer?+
Retailer ordering options depend on the current Rusty South Africa dealer network and the model required. Contact us to confirm whether a suitable retailer is available near you.
07Can I collect my board instead of using a courier?+
Collection is available only when confirmed in advance by the Rusty South Africa team. Do not travel to a factory or collection point until you have received confirmation that the board is ready and the collection details have been provided.
08Can I change my board after placing the order?+
Contact us immediately. A change may be possible only if production has not progressed too far. Changes can affect the price and completion date, and custom specifications cannot be guaranteed once shaping or manufacturing has started.
09How do I place a custom surfboard order?+
Start by completing our detailed custom order contact form. The form collects the information our team needs to personalise your recommendation, including:
- Your age, height and weight
- Your surfing level and fitness
- Your usual wave type and wave size
- Your current board, dimensions and volume
- The model and performance you are looking for
- Your preferred dimensions, construction, fin system and colour
If you are unsure about any specification, leave a note in the form. Our team can review your information and help refine the board before the order is confirmed.
CUSTOM ORDER FORM →010When does production of my custom board begin?+
After your purchase, a member of the Rusty South Africa team will contact you to review and confirm your custom board details. This includes the model, dimensions, volume, construction, fin system, colour and any approved custom options.
Your board will be released into production only after the specifications and required payment have been confirmed.
Once you have approved the final specifications and manufacturing has started, changes to the board are no longer possible. Please check every detail carefully during the confirmation stage.
011Can I order more than one board?+
Yes. Contact us before ordering multiple boards so we can confirm production timing and determine whether a combined delivery rate is available.
012Can I change my delivery address?+
Contact us immediately. Changes may be possible before dispatch. After dispatch, contact the courier as soon as possible. Address changes cannot be guaranteed once a shipment is in transit.

Board building
01What is the difference between PU, EPOLY and EPS?+
PU: a polyurethane foam blank, traditionally glassed with polyester resin, offering a familiar and proven feel.
EPOLY: a polyurethane blank glassed with epoxy resin, combining the familiar feel of PU foam with a stronger epoxy laminate.
EPS/Epoxy: an expanded polystyrene blank glassed with epoxy resin, generally producing a lighter and more buoyant board. The best option depends on the model, waves, surfer and preferred feel.
02How long does it take to build a surfboard?+
Custom PU boards generally take 2-3 weeks and custom EPS boards generally take 2-4 weeks to manufacture. Colour work, special construction, materials and production demand can add time. All timeframes are estimates.
03What does tail rocker do?+
Tail rocker is the curve through the back of the board. More tail rocker can help a board turn more tightly and fit steeper waves, while a flatter tail rocker generally creates more speed and drive. It works together with the outline, rails, bottom contours and fins.
04Which fin system should I choose?+
Fin-system availability depends on the model and order options. Common removable systems include FCS II and Futures. Choose the system that matches the fins you own or prefer, and confirm the selected system carefully before completing a custom order.
05What is the difference between thruster, twin and quad fins?+
A thruster uses three fins for a balanced mix of control, drive and predictability. A twin fin generally feels fast, free and responsive. A quad uses four fins for speed and hold without a centre fin. The correct setup depends on the board design and the waves it is intended for.
06Can I add custom colour or artwork?+
Custom colour and artwork options depend on the model and construction. Discuss your requirements with our team before completing your custom order.
07Are Rusty boards hand shaped?+
Modern surfboard production combines precise design and shaping technology with skilled hand finishing, glassing and quality control.
08What is the difference between a resin tint and an airbrush?+
A resin tint adds pigment to the laminating resin and can create depth, variation and a handcrafted finish. An airbrush applies colour directly to the shaped blank before glassing and generally allows more controlled graphics and colour placement. Final appearance can vary because each custom board is individually produced.
09Can I customise the dimensions of a model?+
Many models can be adjusted within an appropriate range, but large changes can alter the intended performance. Contact us so the requested dimensions can be assessed before the order is confirmed.
010What do surfboard length, width and thickness change?+
Length influences rail line, paddle reach and turning radius. Width affects stability, planing area and speed. Thickness contributes to volume and flotation. Their distribution through the board matters as much as the measurements themselves.
011Which glassing schedule should I choose?+
Lighter glassing can provide a lighter and more responsive board, while heavier glassing generally improves resistance to everyday pressure and impact at the cost of additional weight. Available options depend on the construction and model.
012Why do surfboards get pressure dents?+
Pressure dents occur when the deck compresses under feet, knees or impacts. Some denting is normal wear, especially on lightweight performance boards, and does not automatically indicate a manufacturing defect.
013How should I store my surfboard?+
Keep the board out of direct sun and excessive heat, ideally in a suitable board bag. Do not leave it inside a hot vehicle. Store it securely so it cannot fall, and avoid placing heavy objects on it.
014What should I do if my board gets a ding?+
Leave the water, dry the area and arrange a suitable repair before surfing again. Water entering the foam can cause further damage. Use a repair method compatible with the board's foam and resin construction.
015Can I use polyester resin to repair an EPS board?+
No. Polyester resin can damage EPS foam. EPS boards require an epoxy-compatible repair system. If you are unsure of the construction, ask a qualified surfboard repairer before beginning a repair.
016Why can epoxy boards change colour over time?+
Resin, foam and artwork can change appearance with age, UV exposure and heat. Store the board away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to reduce discolouration and material degradation.

Returns & warranty
01Is my surfboard covered by a warranty?+
Qualifying manufacturing defects are assessed under the Returns Policy and applicable South African consumer law. Normal wear, pressure dents, impact damage, misuse, heat damage, poor storage, unauthorised repair and other external causes are not manufacturing defects.
02What information is needed for a warranty assessment?+
Provide your order details, the board model and construction, a clear description of what happened, photographs of the full board and close-ups of the affected area, and any other information requested by the support team. Do not repair or continue using the board before receiving guidance.
03Is a surfboard broken while surfing automatically covered?+
No. A broken board is assessed individually. Wave impact, collision and other external forces can break a board without a manufacturing defect. Contact us with photographs and an explanation so the circumstances can be reviewed.
04Can I return a custom board if I change my mind?+
Custom-made or personalised boards are not eligible for change-of-mind returns. This does not affect rights relating to qualifying defects or a material failure to meet agreed specifications.
05What should I do if my board arrives damaged?+
Do not use the board. Keep all packaging, photograph the board and the inside and outside of the package, then contact us immediately through the chat box or contact page.
06What is not considered a manufacturing defect?+
Normal wear and tear, impact damage, misuse, neglect, improper storage or handling, unauthorised alterations and other external causes are not manufacturing defects, to the extent permitted by law.
