Rusty began in a small San Diego factory and grew through close collaboration between shapers, glassers, team riders and local surf shops. As the surf industry changed, offshore production became common and the connection between design and manufacturing was often stretched. The brand has since recommitted to a more focused model: boards made close to the surfers they serve, with licensed regional teams building from approved Rusty designs and files. For South Africa, that means combining global design knowledge with local understanding of our waves, surfers and conditions.Local production shortens the conversation between customer and builder. It supports custom dimensions, faster feedback and better quality control while preserving the intent of each model.A Rusty should be more than a logo applied to a generic shape. It should carry the design history, construction standards and performance thinking that built the R-dot—then be finished for the place where it will actually be surfed.Adapted with permission from Rusty Surfboards USA.
