Jojo Roper put together a sequence that would exhaust most big-wave surfers. He first took on a maxing Pe‘ahi swell in Maui, then competed in the Eddie Aikau event at a huge Waimea Bay.Instead of resting, Jojo boarded an overnight flight to San Francisco and reached Half Moon Bay before sunrise. Mavericks was waiting at a scale and intensity that veteran Peter Mel described as unlike anything he had surfed before. The photographs show Jojo committing beneath walls of cold, moving water in conditions that demanded total preparation. He then continued south to meet the same swell at Todos Santos in Baja California.Beyond the travel and physical effort, the run demonstrates what serious big-wave surfing requires: careful equipment, years of judgement and the ability to remain composed when the ocean is at its most powerful.Adapted with permission from Rusty Surfboards USA.
