THE CRAFTSMAN
Rick Hamon is a highly skilled surfboard shaper with an impressive 56 years of experience. Rick grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and started surfing in 1964. Fairly soon after that, he became interested in surfboard shapes and started stripping old boards and reshaping them.
Every new design is a fresh challenge â and another opportunity to create something surfers will enjoy.
A LIFE IN SHAPING
Rick began surfing in Corpus Christi in 1964. His curiosity quickly shifted towards surfboard design, stripping old boards and reshaping them before taking his first professional shaping job at Loe Surfboards in Port Aransas, Texas, in 1967.
After Hurricane Celia destroyed Loe Surfboards, Rick travelled through mainland Mexico, Puerto Rico and Central America before reaching North San Diego County. At Surfing New Image he worked alongside Donald Takayama and Ben Aipa. He later joined Channin Surfboards, where he worked with his hero Mike Diffenderfer.
While working at Channin in 1988, Rick met Rusty and began shaping his boards. Decades later, the partnership continues â or, as the story goes, now Rusty canât get rid of him.
DESIGNS & INFLUENCE
Rick has designed numerous models, including the Dwart, Dozer, Hustler, Rooster and many others. Each new design presented a fresh challenge and allowed him to tap into his creativity.
He has embraced a wide variety of shapes and designs, constantly experimenting and refining his techniques. While he does not have a single signature style, Rick has always been drawn to egg-shaped boards for their versatility and enjoyable ride. His early influences include George Greenough and the Campbell brothers, whose innovative hull and Bonzer designs helped shape his thinking.
BEYOND THE SHAPING BAY
Outside surfboard shaping, Rick has a deep passion for motorcycles and cars and has always found joy in tinkering with them. That connection to speed and mechanics continues to fuel his creative drive.
Grateful for the opportunities and friendships that have enriched his career, Rick looks forward to continuing his work and shaping boards that bring joy and excitement to surfers around the globe.
