Few moments in surfing match the excitement of waxing a new board for the first time. Rusty still remembers the boards that shaped his early years some brilliant, some difficult and almost none exactly as ordered.
Those experiences became part of his education. Riding different outlines, rails and fin arrangements revealed how design choices translate into the water. Even an imperfect board could teach something valuable about speed, turning or the surferâs own technique.
Handmade means individual
A custom surfboard passes through many skilled hands. Small cosmetic variations can happen during shaping, colour work, lamination and sanding. They do not necessarily change strength or performance. Structural faults should always be addressed, but a minor visual imperfection is different from a design problem.
Before judging a new board by the way it looks on the rack or by one frustrating first session give yourself time to understand it. Adjust fins, try different conditions and let your feet learn the design. If the board is sound, wax it up and give it a genuine chance.
