The apex is the fullest point of a surfboard rail, and its position has a major influence on how quickly a board responds. Rusty generally places this point lower than many shapers, particularly on shortboards between roughly 2.25 and 2.75 inches thick.Lower apex, sharper responseA lower apex brings the rail’s edge closer to the water. This gives the surfer a more direct connection when setting a turn and can make the board feel faster and more sensitive. The trade-off is that an extremely low edge demands accurate foot pressure. Push it too far and the rail may catch or resist through the turn. The safer alternativeMany modern boards use a higher, rounder apex. This familiar “frisbee rail” is forgiving, releases easily and feels loose underfoot. It is an excellent option for a wide range of surfers, although it may take slightly longer to engage and will not feel quite as precise.Neither approach is automatically better. The right rail must match the board’s thickness, bottom contour and intended conditions. Rail numbers only make sense as part of the complete design.Adapted with permission from Rusty Surfboards USA.
